Sources and methodology

Source

Data is sourced directly from the official ISO 10383 MIC registry maintained by the ISO 20022 Registration Authority (SWIFT). The registry is the authoritative global list of Market Identifier Codes used to identify exchanges, trading platforms, regulated or non-regulated markets, and trade reporting facilities as sources of prices and related information.

Methodology

The raw CSV was downloaded from the ISO 20022 website and filtered to records with STATUS = ACTIVE, yielding 2,296 active market venues worldwide as of October 2026. Note that despite the dataset name, most MICs are not stock exchanges: the list also covers MTFs, OTFs, systematic internalisers, approved publication arrangements and other trading or reporting venues. Records are sorted alphabetically by MIC. Website URLs were normalised to lowercase with HTTPS scheme where missing. Empty string fields are stored as null.

Caveats

The MIC registry is updated periodically by the Registration Authority. Some venues may have been added or expired since the last update. The operatingMic field identifies the operating entity — for segment-level MICs this will differ from the mic value, pointing to the parent operating exchange. Country codes follow ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 and city names are as reported by the registrant in upper case.

Versioning

URLs under /v1/ are stable: field names and types will not change in a way that breaks consumers. Values can be corrected or records added when the upstream source changes; schema-incompatible updates ship under a new version path. See the stock-exchanges changelog for this dataset's history.
