SI Derived Units

A complete reference of the 22 coherent SI derived units that carry special names and symbols, as defined by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in the 9th edition of the SI Brochure (2019). Each record includes the unit name, symbol, the physical quantity it measures, and its expression in terms of SI base units (metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela). Covers mechanical, electromagnetic, photometric, and radiological quantities from the hertz and newton through to the katal.

Sources and methodology

The International System of Units (SI) defines seven base units and a larger set of derived units formed by combining them. Among these, 22 derived units have been given special names and symbols by the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM). This dataset enumerates all 22, as specified in Table 4 of the 9th edition of the SI Brochure published by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in 2019.

Each record provides the unit’s name, its official symbol (using Unicode superscripts for exponents and the middle dot for multiplication), the physical quantity or quantities it represents, and its expression in terms of the seven SI base units. Where a derived unit is dimensionless (radian, steradian) the expression reflects the cancellation of identical base-unit dimensions. The degree Celsius is listed with an expression of K because its magnitude equals one kelvin; it differs only in offset.

This dataset is suitable for unit-conversion libraries, physics simulations, scientific documentation tools, and educational applications. The data is stable — the 22 named derived units have not changed since the 2019 SI revision — but consumers should note that the BIPM may add new named units in future CGPM resolutions.

Versioning

URLs under /v1/ are stable: field names and types will not change in a way that breaks consumers. Values can be corrected or records added when the upstream source changes; schema-incompatible updates ship under a new version path. See the si-derived-units changelog for this dataset's history.
